SHiNE HiGH
SHiNE HiGH is aimed at homeschooled youth who are studying at the Jr / Sr High school level.
Following is an article from the December, 2006 edition of SHiNE's Learning Matters newsletter.
SHiNE HiGH
SHiNE HiGH is a program started early this fall for SHiNE teens. We participate in many fun activities, like Spanish classes, and building our own roller coaster. I even had the opportunity to teach a class with my friends.
The first month was science month, where we did a variety of things, from dissection, to learning to create a web log, to finding our own blood type. I got a lot out of this month, simultaneously having a chance to teach something I know lots about, and learn about things I've never tried. I was particularly surprised by the dissection. I thought it would be rather disgusting cutting up a squid, but I found that it was actually very interesting to examine the inner workings of the animal.
After science month, we began art classes to learn how to paint a portrait in classical style. We also did a Science Alberta science crate.
But for me SHiNE High isn't just about learning. I also find it an excellent opportunity to meet new people and hang out with friends. Earlier this fall, we were able to go bike riding around the neighbourhood. Many people also took advantage of the nearby playground and basketball court. After the snowfall people are tobogganing and having snowball fights.
I've really been enjoying SHiNE HiGH. It's a great chance to be with my friends, learn new things, and just have fun.
